Why a Seismic Research Network?

The Canadian Risk and Hazards Network indicates that a significant earthquake…is probably Canada’s greatest potential natural disaster.

High percentage of urban infrastructure was constructed prior to the introduction of modern seismic provisions.

The vulnerability of critical older infrastructure such as hospitals, schools and bridges should be addressed before a major earthquake occurs.

The Network involves 26 researchers from 8 Universities across Canada and the research involved covers three major themes:

1. Hazard assessment (with 5 projects)
2. Vulnerability Assessment ( with 6 projects)
3. Mitigation ( with 5 projects)
